Open Data Day

7.3.2020 10:30

Helsinki Central Library Oodi

Group working spaces 3 and 7, 2nd floor, Participatory space Brygga, 1+ floor

Saturday 7th March is the official International Open Data Day! For us, it will be a combination of informal discussions and workshops. Topics include Open Data and Wikidata. The day is organised in an unconference way, where the methods and content are decided among the people who are present.

PROGRAMME:

International Women’s Day edit-a-thon together with Wikimedia
10.30am-1pm, Group Working Space 3, 2nd floor

For the 2020 Open Data Day Wikimedia Finland invites you to attend the International Women’s Day editathon at Helsinki Central Library Oodi. The event is intended to raise awareness of the WikiGap initiative that aims to close the gender gap in Wikipedia. The idea is that participants shall learn how to edit, create and translate Wikipedia-pages on interesting women figures “historian jännät naiset” from history. Wikipedia is one of the most important sources of information worldwide and it gets millions of visitors and reviews each day, however few biographies are written about a female figure. This means that an uncountable number of women scientists, artists and activists are missing from the most popular website. We want to change that. The event is intended to introduce as well as narrow the gap between reading and editing Wikipedia content. The workshop is arranged in collaboration with Historian jännät naiset and the international WikiGap initiative. The event is in Finnish and participants are adviced to bring their own laptops.

HOTOSM mapathon
1pm-4pm, Participatory space Brygga, 1+ floor

Join the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) for a mapping party at Participatory space Brygga in Oodi on Open Data Day 2020 at 1pm! We will trace roads and human settlements from satellite images into OpenStreetMap in order to support disaster response efforts and local development projects in the most vulnerable parts of the world. No previous experience with mapping is required, everyone interested in the topic is welcome to join.

The event starts with a short editing tutorial after which we will contribute to the mapping of a HOT task from https://tasks.hotosm.org/. Please bring your laptop and an external mouse. Coffee, tea and snacks will be served 🙂

Open Data APIs vs. Open APIs
4pm-5pm, Participatory space Brygga, 1+ floor

The concept of API vs. Data and further Open API vs. Open Data are sometimes confusing. That’s why there was a definition done in 2014 from public sectors point of view. It’s now in need of an update due to need for making it more compatible for both companies and public sector but also because it needs to be internationally in sync with the historically separate concept of Open API and levels of openness in open data or open source systems licensing. OKFI together with COSS, Center for Open Source Systems and the federation of Technology Industries in Finland has set up a working group for the update on the definition. There has been lively discussion on this topic in social media and there is a need to open these concepts and the context to a wider audience. Members of the working group Marjukka Niinioja (COSS), Mika Honkanen (OKFI) and Antti “Jogi” Poikola (Technology Industries in Finland) will introduce the subject and guide the conversation.
